On Monday, January 22, 2018, the Presidents, Chancellors, Provosts and other America’s Urban Campus leaders joined Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emanuel and other civic leaders at University of Illinois at Chicago to discuss important issues facing the City of Chicago and their institutions. The central theme of the meeting was the critical role Higher Education plays in the Pre-K to Career pipeline. In discussing the relationship between educating children and the recruitment of top industry to the City, the attendees addressed these key themes:
  • Improving the outcomes of Chicago’s Public Schools and;
  • Increasing the number of students eligible for the Chicago STAR scholarship at City Colleges of Chicago and;
  • Recruiting students to Chicago’s colleges and universities and;
  • Recruiting top industry to employ Chicago’s well-educated and trained workforce.
The attendees also discussed working together to overcome obstacles to these goals such as addressing structural racism and segregation as well as educating leaders and the public about the importance of higher education to the economic strength of the region and Illinois as a whole.
