Mayor Rahm Emanuel met Monday with the leaders from 21 of Chicago’s top colleges and Universities to discuss the relationship between higher education and the future success of the City. The Mayor emphasized the important role Higher Education institutions play in supporting Chicago’s Public Schools students as they plan for college and careers, and providing the talent needed by Chicago’s corporations.
The annual convening of City Hall leadership and academics is organized by America’s Urban Campus (AUC), a coalition of Chicago’s colleges and universities. Matching urban needs with university resources is at the core of AUC’s mission to improve the quality of life for Chicago’s residents and solidify Chicago’s reputation as a destination for college students and young professionals from Chicago, the country and the world.
“In Chicago, high school graduation is no longer the last stop on a student’s educational journey,” said Mayor Emanuel. “We are proud to partner with America’s Urban Campus and Chicago’s college and university partners, who all recognize the value our CPS graduates bring to their institutions, the contributions they make in and out of the classroom, and the imprint they will make on our economy and the world.”
Joining the mayor’s panel on Monday were Helene Gayle, CEO, The Chicago Community Trust; Janice Jackson, CEO, Chicago Public Schools; Juan Salgado, Chancellor, City Colleges of Chicago; and Andrea Zopp, CEO, World Business Chicago.
Each of the panelists spoke about their desire for Higher Education to step in at the intersection of race, class, and gender in order to provide equal access for all Chicago students that prepares them for success in college and career.
The host and master of ceremonies, Michael Amiridis, Ph. D., Chancellor, University of Illinois at Chicago summarized the importance of the meeting, “Assembling the academic leadership of the city in this manner allows us to both set the agenda for collaboration over the next year and learn of the city’s and our civic partners’ key objectives going forward.”
